Meet one of our AHEC Scholars. Her name is Lauren and she is from Waverly, MO. She is currently at the Rockhurst University Doctorate of Physical Therapy. In her words, the reason why she joined AHEC Scholars is that "I first joined AHEC sophomore year of high school and have always thoroughly enjoyed every activity since then. After hearing that I could continue participating in the learning modules and networking even in grad school I had to sign up!"

Nice to meet you, Lauren!

Charles Foust spent his youth in Cleveland, Ohio, and graduated from Bowling Green State University with a bachelor’s degree in forensic biology. He is attending medical school at Kansas City University and is expected to graduate as part of the Class of 2022. His belief that health is an integral part of what we do in life as well as watching the TV show, “House,” sparked an interest for Charles to pursue a career in healthcare. Both of his parents work in the healthcare field. His mother is an early intervention physical therapist, and his dad works with healthcare billing. Wilderness medicine is one of his special interests. Charles has expressed an interest in specializing in internal medicine and pediatrics. At Phelps Health, he hopes to gain practical skills in the medical field and learn about new perspectives in a different part of the country. His hobbies include reading, hiking and trapshooting. He has previously volunteered as a tutor and with the Ronald McDonald House Charities. Nice to meet you Charles!

Over this week, we’ll go over 8 #Healthliteracy tips that you can use. #1 is to ask open-ended questions. These are questions that prompt patients to answer further than a simple “yes” or “no”. “What do you do to exercise?” or “what kind of fruits and vegetables are you eating?” https://t.co/WvWyY649U3 Missouri_AHEC photo

The third Friday in Oct is National Mammography Day. This is a reminder to women that the best defense is early detection. Mammograms can detect a problem before there are any outward signs. Visit your doctor and set up a mammogram
