Adnan Syed is a third-year dental student at the University of Missouri – Kansas City. Syed shares his goals with the AHEC- “My career goals to become a general dentist and practice in a community health setting. My reason for participating in the Missouri AHEC Scholars program was to gain more knowledge and experience on how to best provide good healthcare and dental care. My goal is to use what I learn from the scholar’s program in my practice as a student doctor seeing patients for the next two years and beyond as a dentist.”
Our team wishes you a successful career and appreciates all your hard work.

Today we would like to introduce our amazing AHEC Scholar, Joyce Smith. She is currently enrolled in Kansas City University of Medicine & Biosciences (KCUMB). Her decision to apply to the AHEC Scholar program was to explore and educate herself on the aspects of rural medicine and how a provider needs to adapt to the change in environment and usually lack of additional resources, and what this means for her future patients. She additionally joined to help strengthen and better educate ownself on interacting with other health professionals; skills which she hopes to utilize in her future! Lastly, she really wanted to work with the next generation who are considering going into the health professional field. She is excited to get to educate them and open their eyes to possibilities that they didn't know existed.
Before medical school and during her first two years, she says she assumed that she would go into pediatrics. Unsure if she would be a general pediatrician or do a specialty. Since being on third-year rotations, she found general surgery was a lot of fun! It may be challenging and it would be difficult to get in, but she believes that it would definitely reach the goal she always wanted to be in and excel in it as she always does. Not giving up on her previous interest in pediatrics, she thinks that pediatric general surgery would be a great option to consider.

AHEC wishes her the best of luck to her future career and full support to achieve what she has planned for.
